Background

Introduction

Awakened Learning Space was founded and developed over many years by Alison Salter. Alison works mainly as an international Meditation and Spiritual Teacher today, but prior to this, she worked as a music teacher for almost 20 years. A life-long apprenticeship in music served to lead her to proceed all the way through the subject of music towards the higher calling of teaching people how to thoroughly immerse in life and to find peace, happiness, enjoyment and freedom, beyond the mind. This wisdom is shared here in Awakened Learning Space at an accessible level to everyone who is interested, regardless of whether participants have any background in spirituality or meditation.

Music: The Graceful Offering

Alison has been a musician since the age of 3, becoming multi instrumental across all disciplines: brass, woodwind, strings and piano and gaining a First Class Music Degree in 2004. She worked in schools as a peripatetic brass teacher for many years before founding the music school in 2012, which now exists as Sound’s Creative in this Awakened Learning Space. Through her musical multi-disciplinary training, Alison took the most potent learning points which each instrument offered and melded it into a wholesome way of teaching. Early in Alison’s career as a music teacher, she began to look deeper than the subject of music, more in the direction of the psychology of learning in the context of music teaching. What separated the successful Grade 8 students from the rest? What did they have which other students did not? She discovered it was the wholesome way in which they learned which set them apart. These successful students all learned relatively equally with their three primary senses: visual, auditory and kinaesthetic. Alison observed that once these were in balance, and working As One, learning became easy, effortless and very much accelerated.

Teaching and Learning

Alison developed an effective form of teaching which accelerated learning from the general average ‘one grade per year’ rule in music, so that pupils would thoroughly reach Grade 5 in 18 months – 2 years and Grade 8 in as little as 3 – 4 years. This technique which adjoins the senses together As One, underpins much of the work at Awakened Learning Space. It not only is effective in music teaching, but accelerates learning with ease in any subject.

Today, our children are mostly conditioned to learn predominantly in a mono-perceptive way, that is, visually with the widespread usage of screens. This has had a negative impact on music tuition over the last 15 years because many children simple are not developing their listening capabilities and more importantly are losing the ability to create something for themselves, but rather just to consume what is delivered to them via a screen. Also, children are unable to connect to their inner world of emotion because their eyes constantly take them ‘out there’ to something other than themselves.

The Broader Value of Music: A Roadmap for Life

There are many additional helpful benefits along the way of learning in this way, most obviously that due to the rapid level of progress, the student loves to learn and gains self confidence in their ability. So they are able to tap into a positive vicious circle, understanding that ‘I get out of this life something proportionate to the quality of what I put in.’ These are children who will have a positive influence on the world. It is a stark contrast to a visual based consumeristic generation of entitled children who think that the world will bring everything they need and drop it in their lap.

This method of teaching yielded many successful musicians and highly intelligent students, as well as a 100% exam pass rate over 18 years. So invariably students and their parents began to adopt this in other areas of their children’s lives and education. It became apparent that Alison’s method of teaching was a ‘life-hack’ if you want to learn anything thoroughly and quickly. It keeps the mind in a one-pointed state of focus, it links up mind with body and has the effect of merging the senses into one ‘sense’: Awareness.

“Awareness is the very foundation upon which this Awakened Learning Space
is built and around which all meditative paths are centred.”

-Alison Salter

Music offers many points of learning which can be adopted in our wider lives, and gradually Alison became aware that music was a very profound way of creating, for young people, a life manual to serve them for life. This is what Alison offers here in Awakened Learning Space, for a small few who are ready to take this journey through music, but for others via inroads such as learning in nature, and many different methods of otherwise augmenting the declining ‘perceptive awareness’ gained through listening and feel to take those first steps to leading a wholesome and easy way to tread through this life both for ourselves, for other people and for the planet.

Once we have gathered up our sensory inputs and we function as Awareness, we open a door into the inner world of feeling.

Our Awakened Purpose

In this inner world is where, with practice and professional guidance, we find Peace, Happiness and Freedom, the Essence of Our Being. Alison wishes to share this Essence of Life with adults and children alike in this Awakened Learning Space. It is a way which, through a variety of methods, transcends thinking and the stress, anxiety and depression which accompanies it, and learns instead to learn how to tread with ease and enjoy this life, simply through Knowing Being itself.

Awakened Learning Space is aimed at children, families and also adults who are just starting out on a deeper path through Life. A path which transcends the superficial facade of everyday life.
